Gwendolyn Bean

June 2014 - December 2017

For many years, the Pike County Alabama Branch was inactive but along came Gwendolyn Bean and a group of dedicated and determined individuals to revitalize the oldest civil rights organization in this country. It happened, on June 19, 2014, the Pike County Branch of the NAACP was re-established. Ms. Bean thank you for your leadership, hard-work, countless hours, and most of all your willingness to serve. You persevered. Leadership is never easy and often you've found yourself alone, however, you remained steadfast throughout and the Branch is forever grateful. Thank you for you service!

NAACP FACTS

Founded in 1909, NAACP was one of the earliest and most influential civil rights organization:

  •  Focused on legal strategies designed to confront critical civil rights issues of the day
  •  Called for federal anti-lynching laws and coordinated a series of challenges to state-sponsored  segregation in public schools
  • Landmark 1954 Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education, which declared the doctrine of “separate but equal” to be unconstitutional.
  • Co-organized the 1963 March on Washington
  • Lobbied for legislation that resulted in the 1964 Civil Rights Act and 1965 Voting Act
